Questions About Microsoft 365 Security
Is Microsoft Secure Score enough to tell if our tenant is secure?
No. Microsoft describes Secure Score as a measure of how many of its recommended security actions you have taken, and says it isn’t an absolute measurement of how likely a breach is. A high score shows the recommended controls are switched on. Whether an account is being misused today is a separate question, and Microsoft answers it with a different tool: Entra ID Protection reports risky sign-ins and leaked credentials. Use Secure Score as a checklist, then assess the tenant against the CIS Microsoft 365 Benchmark and watch how accounts behave.
What does a Microsoft 365 security assessment check?
It compares your tenant’s live configuration with the CIS Microsoft 365 Benchmark and ranks the gaps by risk. Elasticito runs the assessment on Overe’s platform. It audits user accounts, flags privileged accounts and connected third-party apps, and looks for risky policies and misconfigurations across Exchange, SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive. You get a prioritised report of the gaps. Fixing them is the separate hardening stage.
Are security defaults enough, or do we need Conditional Access?
Security defaults are enough when one rule for every user will do. They are Microsoft’s free baseline: every user registers for multi-factor authentication and legacy authentication is blocked, which Microsoft says stops more than 99.9% of common identity attacks. Microsoft advises organisations with complex security requirements to use Conditional Access instead. If a policy must depend on the user, their location or their device, you need Conditional Access and Microsoft Entra ID P1 licences.
Does Microsoft 365 include security, or do we need more?
It includes a security baseline, and how much more you get depends on your licences. Security defaults give every tenant multi-factor authentication and block legacy authentication. Conditional Access needs Entra ID P1, and Entra ID Protection, which flags risky sign-ins and leaked credentials, needs P2. Identity threat detection and response (ITDR) watches how accounts behave after sign-in. Elasticito provides it through Overe’s Monitor and Respond stages: clear-cut cases are fixed automatically and the rest reach your team as a ranked list of actions.
What does Microsoft 365 tenant hardening involve?
Hardening applies a baseline of security policies to the tenant, then checks they stay in place. In Elasticito’s service, Overe enforces best-practice policies such as multi-factor authentication and data loss prevention once the assessment is done, so each gap in the report becomes a change in the tenant. Monitoring follows, because policies drift as admins make changes in the months after a project ends. Agree up front which changes need your sign-off before they are applied.
Where is our Microsoft 365 security data held?
In an EU or US data centre, chosen for each customer site, so UK and EU organisations can keep it in the EU. Overe connects to the tenant through Microsoft’s granular delegated admin privileges (GDAP) and advertises a two-minute quick setup. It scores the tenant’s security posture as soon as it is connected.
